Final Day included fantastic speeches from Stephanie Bloomingdale and Thevaki Thevaratnam, and the re-election of President Gil McGowan and Secretary Treasurer Siobhan Vipond
The final day of convention kicked off with a session on Trump Comes North: How Labour Must Respond. Wisconsin State AFL-CIO President, Stephanie Bloomingdale shared her wisdom from decades of experience in labour as an organizer, negotiator, trainer, and activist. She provided delegates with hope focusing on their successful fight back against former Governor Scott Walker.
Next up was Thevaki Thevaratnam, Director of Research and Education at the Ontario Federation of Labour, to tell delegates about the OFL’s work on resisting the right-wing agenda of Doug Ford. She described how the Ford government has systematically attacked worker’s rights and slashed public services in just one year. She concluded with a powerful message of how labour is organizing and fighting back.
Delegates then turned to how the Alberta labour movement can fight back against any attempts to attack worker rights, followed by some more vibrant resolution debate.
The convention wrapped up with the re-election of both AFL Officers. Gil McGowan will continue to serve in his role as President and Siobhan Vipond remains the Secretary Treasurer.
